Purpose of Activity/Assignment

In South Sudan, UNICEF is currently seeking a qualified Research Consultant to support its efforts in combating gender-based violence (GBV) through the implementation of the Communities Care model. This model aims to address harmful social norms and beliefs that perpetuate GBV, ultimately creating safer communities for women and girls. The Research Consultant will play a pivotal role in managing all aspects of research, monitoring, and evaluation related to the Communities Care programme, providing technical support and guidance to UNICEF partners on evidence-based programming.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Research Consultant’s role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities aimed at facilitating the successful implementation and evaluation of the Communities Care programme. These duties include:

  1. Tool Revision and Adaptation: The Consultant will revise and adapt programme tools for baseline and endline surveys, monitoring, and evaluation in collaboration with UNICEF and partners. This involves developing protocols to ensure the privacy and confidentiality of study data in line with ethical standards.
  2. Field Coordination and Capacity Building: Quarterly visits to South Sudan will be conducted by the Consultant to lead research and monitoring activities, providing technical support and capacity building to UNICEF and partners on programme tools and objectives. Additionally, the Consultant will support active collaboration and information sharing between UNICEF partners, local authorities, and other stakeholders.
  3. Survey Oversight and Analysis: The Consultant will oversee baseline and endline surveys, including data collection, collation, and analysis in locations where partners are implementing Communities Care. This involves producing comprehensive reports on survey findings to inform programme adaptations.
  4. Learning Platforms and Process Evaluation: The Consultant will establish learning platforms for sharing experiences and promoting effective approaches among organisations engaged in implementing Communities Care. Additionally, the Consultant will design and implement a process evaluation using qualitative and quantitative methods to document progress and challenges.
  5. Report Production and Toolkit Review: The Consultant will produce evaluation reports with findings, lessons learned, and recommendations, as well as review the Communities Care toolkit and provide guidance for adaptations based on implementation in South Sudan.

Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for the role of Research Consultant, candidates must possess the following qualifications and experience:

  • A Master’s Degree in Sociology, Social Sciences, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience working on GBV in humanitarian settings.
  • A strong understanding of Communities Care implementation and GBV service delivery.
  • Proven experience in planning and facilitating trainings and workshops.
  • Proficiency in qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Excellent computer skills (MS Office) and fluency in English.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multicultural environment.
