Background & Job Description

The IMF is a global organization of 190 member countries, working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the world. The Economist Program (EP) is the primary entry point for young economists at the IMF. It’s a highly competitive three-year program designed for recent PhD graduates, providing hands-on exposure to a cross-section of the IMF’s work. Participants rotate through different departments (e.g., area departments dealing with country-specific issues, or functional departments focusing on fiscal, monetary, or financial sector issues), gaining broad experience in policy analysis, economic surveillance, research, and capacity development. Beyond the EP, the IMF also offers opportunities for Research Analysts (for Bachelor’s graduates) and the Fund Internship Program (FIP) for PhD students.

Tasks

Tasks for IMF Junior Professional roles, particularly within the Economist Program, involve rigorous economic analysis and policy work:

  • Conducting macroeconomic surveillance and analysis for member countries.
  • Participating in country missions to assess economic conditions, identify policy challenges, and provide recommendations.
  • Analyzing fiscal, monetary, and balance of payments issues.
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of IMF-supported programs.
  • Preparing analytical papers, policy briefs, and reports for internal and external audiences.
  • Undertaking research on global economic issues, financial stability, and development challenges.
  • Providing technical assistance and capacity development to member country authorities.
