Background & Job Description
The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) is a globally recognized research organization dedicated to advancing food security, reducing poverty, and fostering sustainable agricultural development. Through its Markets, Trade, and Institutions Unit (MTI), IFPRI focuses on improving food systems and rural economies by conducting policy-driven research and impact evaluations.
IFPRI is currently seeking two Research Assistants (or Research Analysts I) to join its MTI team in Guatemala City, Guatemala. These positions will support ongoing projects in Central America related to:
- Impact evaluation of agricultural programs
- Food security and nutrition research
- Agricultural markets and trade
- Rural development and migration studies
Work Location & Employment Terms
- 📍 Location: Guatemala City, Guatemala (based at the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) office)
- 💼 Position Type: Full-time, one-year renewable contract
- ✈ Travel: May involve occasional travel within Central America
- ✅ Work Authorization: Applicants must have legal work authorization in Guatemala

Tasks
The Research Assistants will support key research initiatives within the MTI unit by contributing to data collection, analysis, and policy research. The primary responsibilities include:
1. Data Collection & Analysis
- Designing quantitative and qualitative data collection methods for field research.
- Conducting household and farm surveys to gather information on agricultural markets, food security, and economic conditions.
- Analyzing large-scale datasets using statistical software (e.g., STATA, R, Python, or other econometrics tools).
- Managing data cleaning, validation, and organization for research studies.
2. Research & Impact Evaluation
- Assisting in designing impact evaluations of agricultural and rural development programs.
- Conducting literature reviews and policy analysis on food security, migration, and agricultural markets.
- Supporting research projects focused on agricultural trade, climate resilience, and rural livelihoods.
- Contributing to econometric modeling and applied research for policy insights.
3. Report Writing & Publications
- Preparing research papers, policy briefs, technical reports, and presentations.
- Drafting sections of working papers, journal articles, and conference presentations.
- Summarizing key findings for government agencies, NGOs, and policymakers.
4. Policy Engagement & Communication
- Assisting in stakeholder engagement with governments, development agencies, and research institutions.
- Supporting workshops, seminars, and training sessions related to food security and agricultural policy.
- Preparing visual reports and presentations to communicate research findings.
These responsibilities ensure that research findings are effectively translated into policy recommendations that drive positive change in rural and agricultural economies.

Qualifications
Education and Certification
- 🎓 Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in economics, agricultural economics, public policy, statistics, development studies, or a related field.
- Advanced degrees or coursework in econometrics, data analysis, and agricultural policy are preferred.
Experience
- 📊 Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in research, data analysis, or impact evaluation (strong preference for work related to food security, agricultural markets, or rural development).
- Experience working in Latin America, particularly Guatemala or Central America, is a plus.
Technical Skills
✔ Data Analysis & Statistics – Proficiency in STATA, R, Python, or GIS software for economic and agricultural research.
✔ Quantitative & Qualitative Research – Strong experience with survey methods, impact evaluations, and econometric analysis.
✔ Agricultural & Rural Development Knowledge – Understanding of global food security, agricultural trade, and rural economies.
✔ Policy Research & Communication – Ability to draft research reports, policy briefs, and presentations for policymakers.
✔ Bilingual Advantage – Fluency in Spanish is required; English proficiency is highly desirable for international collaborations.
Preferred Skills & Competencies
- Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills in economic research.
- Ability to work independently and in teams within a research-oriented environment.
- Familiarity with Central American food policy frameworks and agricultural development programs.
Legal & Language Requirements
