Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The Sustainable UN facility project, phase IV, has an increased focus on informing and engaging senior level management and improving system-wide reporting, improving knowledge-management within the community of practice while still maintaining a focus on good communication and the exchange of best practices via the Greening the Blue publication (https://www.greeningtheblue.org) and online community. These activities are in support of the key outcome for the project: to accelerate action and mobilize UN entities to further mainstream environmental considerations into all aspects of management and operations and improve upon the monitoring, reporting, and management of environmental impacts of their internal environmental sustainability. Under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer the communications consultant will undertake the following responsibilities:
1. Conduct Interviews with relevant NYO staff and sub-set of UN entity focal points and other key stakeholders to define needs and expectations related to engagement of senior management and Member States. Homebased Communications Consultant Positions at United Nations
2. Draft Communication Plan which includes how and who to target broader audiences to support the implementation of the UN 2020-2030 Strategy for sustainability in the area of management and submit it to the SUN team, New York Office, and its key stakeholders for approval.
3. Support to 2023 Greening the Blue Report finalization and Launch campaign.
4. Develop a Greening the Blue Report plan with milestones, tasks, and timeline for the development of the 2024 Report. Homebased Communications Consultant Positions at United Nations
5. Work with the SUN team in preparing and coordinating the Greening the Blue 2023 and 2024 report. This includes drafting and editing submissions, ensuring compliance with UNEP style guidelines, publication reviews and approvals, and coordinating feedback and contributions from relevant stakeholders.
6. Coordinate Launch of the 2024 Report and support communication of the Greening the Blue report to UN entities and in interagency meetings organized by SUN as needed.
7. Work the SUN team in any communication, launch plans, presentations that are necessary to communicate progress on the work of the team during the contract period, in particular populate the Greening the Blue website with highlights of SUN teamwork, best practices from UN organizations and continues discussions of the Greening the Blue working group. 8. Draft Agenda, send invitations, prepare presentations and facilitate two (2) hybrid and/or online meetings of the Working Group on Environmental Sustainability network and provide reports summarizing discussions and decisions taken. Homebased Communications Consultant Positions at United Nations
Qualifications/special skills
A post graduate degree in an environmental field, communications, development or social sciences is required.
At least 7 years’ experience in communications, and/or campaigns management in private and/or public sectors is required.
Experience with international organizations is desired.
Experience in communications focused on institutional sustainability is required.
Up-to-date proficiency with communications best practices, including social media, hybrid events, marketing briefs and online media required.
Experience in writing, editing and producing communications /marketing materials is required.
