About the GIZ Development Cooperation Trainee Program

The Development Cooperation Trainee Program, run by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), is a premier opportunity for young professionals to gain extensive training in international development and renewable energy sectors. This program offers a structured, hands-on learning experience, equipping trainees with expertise in program development, energy policy, and sustainable solutions.

This 17-month paid trainee program consists of three practical phases across various organizations:

  1. Eight-month assignment in Ghana working on the “Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency for Climate Protection” project.
  2. Three-month international organization assignment, providing a global perspective on energy sustainability.
  3. Five-month placement at BMZ, gaining insight into policy-making and governmental strategies for clean energy initiatives.

With a monthly stipend of €2,300 gross, trainees will receive financial support while building a strong foundation in sustainable energy, development policy, and climate action.

Role Overview: Trainee in Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency

Trainees will be actively engaged in clean energy projects, net metering, and grid-connected renewable energy systems in Ghana’s energy sector. The program aims to enhance Ghana’s renewable energy transition, which currently represents only 2% of the electricity mix.

Through this role, participants will work closely with government entities, industry professionals, and development organizations to support Ghana’s sustainable energy policies. This traineeship is ideal for those interested in engineering, energy policy, and international development.

Key Responsibilities – First Practical Phase (Ghana Assignment)

During the first eight-month phase in Ghana, trainees will:

🔹 Develop Training Materials

  • Assist in creating teaching resources on net metering and the integration of decentralized renewable energy into national grids.
  • Work with experts to prepare educational content for state-owned electricity suppliers (ECG and NEDCo).

🔹 Support Energy Providers & Grid Capacity Studies

  • Assist electricity suppliers and GIZ experts in researching the capacity of Ghana’s distribution grid for PV (photovoltaic) electricity integration.
  • Provide insights into how solar power can enhance Ghana’s energy security and sustainability.

🔹 Establish an Energy Efficiency Network

  • Collaborate with businesses to establish an energy efficiency network for industrial and commercial companies.
  • Help develop training programs to educate employees on energy conservation and sustainable practices.

🔹 Identify Renewable Energy & Efficiency Solutions

  • Research and propose practical solutions for Ghanaian industries to adopt renewable energy technologies and efficiency measures.
  • Engage with stakeholders to enhance energy efficiency policies and climate mitigation strategies.

The responsibilities for the second and third practical phases will be developed during the trainee program based on individual performance and interests.

Candidate Profile & Qualifications

Applicants must possess a strong academic background in renewable energy, energy efficiency, or energy policy. This program is designed for young professionals eager to contribute to global energy transitions and climate action initiatives.

Required Educational Background & Skills

Academic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy policy, electrical engineering, or related fields.

Technical Knowledge

  • Understanding of renewable energy technologies (solar PV, net metering, energy grids).
  • Familiarity with energy policy, regulatory frameworks, and financing mechanisms.

Language Proficiency

  • Fluent German and English skills (written & spoken) are mandatory.
