Background & Job Description

GIZ operates worldwide on behalf of the German Government and other clients, implementing international cooperation projects for sustainable development. The GIZ Internship Programme offers a valuable learning experience, allowing interns to integrate into project teams at headquarters in Germany or in various country offices globally. Interns will support ongoing initiatives in diverse fields such as climate action, economic development, good governance, peace and security, and vocational training. The program emphasizes hands-on learning, exposure to real-world development challenges, and the opportunity to contribute directly to impactful projects, all while receiving a competitive monthly stipend.  

Tasks

Tasks for GIZ interns are diverse and depend on the specific project and department. Common responsibilities may include:

  • Conducting research and analysis on sector-specific topics (e.g., renewable energy, gender mainstreaming, land management, digital infrastructure).  
  • Assisting in the preparation of reports, policy documents, presentations, and communication materials for project outcomes.  
  • Supporting the organization and logistics of workshops, training sessions, and international meetings.  
  • Contributing to data management, monitoring, and evaluation activities for ongoing projects.
  • Collaborating with national and international partners, stakeholders, and GIZ colleagues.
  • Providing administrative and logistical support to project teams.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • Must be currently enrolled as a student (typically 4th semester or higher for undergraduate, or graduate-level) OR have graduated no longer than six months ago from the start of the internship.  
  • A university degree in a relevant discipline is preferred, such as economics, political science, international relations, development studies, environmental sciences, agriculture, engineering, ICT, law, or specific project-related fields.  
  • Strong academic performance is generally expected.

Experience

  • Some practical experience, including prior internships, in an international context or relevant field (e.g., development cooperation, civil society, private sector) is often an advantage.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are generally required. Good German skills are often a strong advantage, and for some roles, mandatory. Knowledge of French or other relevant local languages is also beneficial depending on the assignment country.
  • Strong analytical thinking, a structured working style, and very good knowledge of common MS Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) are essential.  
  • Ability to work independently, proactively, and within multicultural teams.

Additional Information

GIZ offers a monthly stipend for its international interns, typically around €2,205.04 (gross). In some cases, an additional monthly expatriation allowance may be provided for international assignments. Internships generally last between 3 to 6 months, though some specific trainee programs can be longer (e.g., 17 months). Interns are responsible for their own accommodation, travel, visa costs (if applicable), and comprehensive health insurance.
