The Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program 2025 offers fully funded teaching assistantships in the United States to non-U.S. graduates and early-career educators. Selected participants gain professional experience while promoting cross-cultural understanding and language learning across U.S. campuses.

Background & Program Description

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), the Fulbright FLTA Program is part of the broader Fulbright Foreign Student Program. The initiative is designed to improve Americans’ understanding of global cultures by placing young international educators as teaching assistants in U.S. colleges and universities.

Participants teach their native languages and engage in cultural exchange activities while also enrolling in coursework that advances their academic and professional goals. The program involves over 55 countries and more than 35 languages across hundreds of U.S. institutions, including community colleges and four-year universities.

The Institute of International Education (IIE) oversees academic placement and program supervision for most Fulbright FLTAs.


Tasks

  • Serve as teaching assistants in language departments at U.S. universities and colleges
  • Conduct language labs, cultural presentations, and conversation groups
  • Enroll in at least two courses per semester to enhance professional development
  • Participate in community outreach and intercultural exchange activities
  • Represent their countries and cultures on and off campus

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field by the start of the program
  • Strong academic record
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and commitment to teaching or education

Experience

  • Teaching experience or training in education, linguistics, or foreign language instruction is preferred
  • Interest in promoting cross-cultural understanding
  • Proficiency in English is required (TOEFL or IELTS scores may be needed, based on country requirements)

Duration: 9 months (non-renewable)
Coverage: The program is fully funded, covering tuition, travel, living stipend, and health insurance
