Background & Job Description
The FAO Internship Programme is a learning opportunity designed to attract highly motivated young women and men who wish to share their new perspectives, innovative ideas, and latest academic research within FAO’s diverse domains. This program allows selected students and recent graduates to supplement their academic knowledge with practical work experience in a field related to FAO’s mission of eradicating hunger, improving nutrition, and promoting sustainable agriculture. Interns will gain a deeper understanding of FAO’s mandate and programs, contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and FAO’s Strategic Framework. Placements are available at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy, and in various regional and country offices worldwide.
Tasks
Interns will be assigned tasks based on their academic profile and the needs of the FAO division or office. These may include:
- Conducting research and analysis on topics such as food security, climate change, rural development, and environmental sustainability.
- Assisting with data collection, management, and reporting for various projects.
- Contributing to policy development and technical cooperation initiatives.
- Supporting communication and outreach efforts, including drafting articles, presentations, and social media content.
- Participating in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of FAO programs.
- Collaborating with technical experts in fields like agronomy, nutrition, fisheries, forestry, and water resource management.
- Providing administrative and organizational support for meetings, events, and daily operations.

Education and Certification
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D.) at a recognized academic institution at the time of application.
- Alternatively, candidates who have recently graduated (within the past year/12 months) from an undergraduate or graduate course are eligible.
- Specialization in a field relevant to FAO’s mission, such as agriculture, food science, environmental sciences, economics, international relations, public policy, nutrition, sustainable development, IT, or related technical disciplines.
- FAO only considers higher educational qualifications obtained from accredited institutions recognized in the World Higher Education Database (WHED).
Experience
- No specific professional work experience is explicitly required, as the program focuses on providing a learning opportunity for young talent. However, any relevant academic projects, volunteer work, or previous internships in related fields will be an asset.
- Candidates must be aged between 21 and 30 years at the start of their internship.
- Must be a national of an FAO Member Country.
- A working knowledge of at least one of the FAO’s official languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, or Spanish) is required. Knowledge of a second official language is considered a strong asset.
- Ability to adapt to a multicultural environment, possess good communication skills, and be proficient in basic computer programs.
- Candidates with immediate family members (mother, father, sister, or brother) employed by FAO are not eligible.
Additional Information
FAO internships typically last between 3 and 11 months. Interns receive a monthly stipend (approximately US$700, though the exact amount may vary based on duty station and local currency) and medical coverage for service-incurred incidents. While a stipend is provided, interns are generally responsible for their own accommodation, visa costs (if applicable), and travel arrangements to the duty station.
The application process is ongoing, with FAO accepting applications year-round through a “Call for Expression of Interest” on their official careers portal. There isn’t a single deadline for all 2025 internships; instead, applications are reviewed as suitable opportunities arise. It is highly recommended to regularly check the FAO employment website and apply to the general Internship Programme roster. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for an interview.
