Overview: The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Human Rights Officer. The role is based in the Human Right Council Branch in Geneva, Switzerland. As a Human Rights Officer, you will work under the general guidance of the Chief of the Human Rights Council Branch, reporting to the Secretary of the Human Rights Council.

Responsibilities:

  1. Support for Human Rights Council Sessions: Provide substantive and technical support to the regular sessions of the Human Rights Council, informal consultations, and other meetings.
  2. Research and Analysis: Conduct substantive research and analysis of human rights issues/events, assessing their impact on the human rights situation.
  3. Data Collection and Analysis: Collect and analyze human rights data and indicators in the country/region of assignment, including gender-specific data. Entry Level Opportunities | 2 Human Rights Officers Positions at United Nations
  4. Advisory Committee Support: Provide support to the Advisory Committee of the Human Rights Council and follow up on the implementation of decisions by policy-making bodies.
  5. Integration of Human Rights Issues: Ensure human rights issues, including gender equality considerations, are integrated into political, humanitarian, and economic efforts and programs.
  6. Work Planning: Define work plans for the assigned area in accordance with established terms of reference.
  7. Representation: Represent the Human Rights Council Branch at working level meetings.
  8. Capacity Building: Direct capacity-building efforts on human rights.

  10. Guidance: Provide guidance to new/junior staff.
  11. Other Duties: Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in law, political science, international relations, social sciences, or related field.   • Work Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law, or related areas. Experience with intergovernmental bodies and human rights mechanisms is desirable.

Assessment: Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise followed by a competency-based interview.
