The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is hiring a part-time Entry-level Associate Research Officer at its Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy. The position is within the Natural Sciences Sector (SC) and requires a dynamic and dedicated individual to support research in Dynamical Systems and Theoretical Mathematics.
The Associate Research Officer will report to the Head of Section/Research Scientist and work in collaboration with the Research Scientist leading the Dynamical Systems Group. The role includes conducting research, organizing programs, mentoring scientists, and contributing to scientific discussions globally.

Tasks & Responsibilities
The selected candidate will be responsible for:
Research
- Conducting high-quality research in Mathematics, with a focus on Topological Dynamical Systems, Continuum Theory, and Ergodic Theory.
- Working closely with scientists and researchers to advance knowledge in the field.
- Collaborating with ICTP scientific sections and external institutions.
Program Coordination & Training
- Organizing seminars, workshops, and topical meetings within the field of expertise.
- Presenting research findings and participating in scientific discussions.
Scientific Mentorship
- Supporting scientific visitors and fellows at ICTP, particularly those from developing nations.
- Providing mentorship and training to early-career researchers.
Additional Contributions
- Engaging in activities that support the success of the Section’s work.
- Ensuring a collaborative and inclusive research environment.

Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Certification
- A PhD or doctoral degree in Mathematics, Topological Dynamical Systems, or a closely related field.
- Alternatively, a Master’s degree with relevant experience may be considered.
Work Experience
- 1-2 years of research experience in Theoretical Mathematics.
- Strong publication record and potential for high-impact research.
- Experience in Dynamical Systems, Topological Dynamics, Continuum Theory, and Ergodic Theory.
Skills & Competencies
- Ability to work efficiently under pressure and with minimal supervision.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Experience in building partnerships between scientific institutions.
