Organizational Setting and Reporting: The United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (“Mechanism”) is offering remote internships starting May 2024. This internship, situated within the Mechanism Information Programme for Affected Communities (MIP), provides hands-on experience in research and communication within the realm of international criminal justice. Under the direct supervision of the Public Information Officer, interns will support the Mechanism’s efforts to preserve the legacies of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will collaborate closely with MIP staff, contributing to various communication projects aimed at raising awareness, promoting understanding, and fostering reconciliation efforts related to the war crimes committed during the conflicts of the 1990s in the former Yugoslavia. Responsibilities include conducting research in the ICTY/IRMCT database, assisting with the production of public information products, supporting social media communication and awareness-raising campaigns, drafting correspondence and presentations, attending meetings, and assisting in event organization.

The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) is seeking passionate individuals interested in international criminal justice for remote internships starting May 2024. This unique opportunity, based within the Mechanism Information Programme for Affected Communities (MIP), offers interns the chance to delve into research and communication initiatives vital to preserving the legacies of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). As an intern, you will play a crucial role in raising awareness, promoting understanding, and contributing to reconciliation efforts related to war crimes committed during the conflicts of the 1990s in the former Yugoslavia.
About the Mechanism: The Mechanism was established to perform essential functions previously carried out by the ICTR and ICTY, striving to reflect best practices in the field of international criminal justice. With branches in The Hague, The Netherlands, and Arusha, Tanzania, the Mechanism is dedicated to upholding the legacies of these pioneering ad hoc international criminal courts.
About the Internship: As a Research and Communication Intern, you will work under the direct supervision of the Public Information Officer in the MIP. Your primary responsibility will be to support various communication projects aimed at providing information and support to communities affected by the conflicts of the 1990s in the former Yugoslavia. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in research, public information, and community outreach within the context of international criminal justice.
Responsibilities: During your internship, you will collaborate closely with MIP staff, contributing to the implementation of different communication projects. Your responsibilities will include:
- Conducting research in the ICTY/IRMCT database to gather valuable insights into the conflicts of the 1990s in the former Yugoslavia.
- Assisting in the production of public information products such as videos, social media posts, and online exhibitions to raise awareness and promote understanding.
- Supporting social media communication and awareness-raising campaigns to engage with affected communities and the general public.
- Drafting correspondence, newsletters, news items, brochures, talking points, and presentations related to the legacy of the ICTY.
- Attending meetings and preparing meeting minutes to ensure effective communication and coordination within the team.
- Assisting in the organization of events, including in-person and online lectures, workshops, and trainings, to facilitate dialogue and reconciliation efforts.
Qualifications and Special Skills: To qualify for this internship, you must meet one of the following requirements:
- Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
- Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher). In addition, you should demonstrate familiarity with transitional justice and the legacy of the ICTY and IRMCT, evidenced through academic studies or prior professional involvement in these areas. Previous experience in an administrative work environment is desirable.
Language Requirements: Fluency in English, Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian is required for this internship.
