Context: The OECD Investment Division operates within the Directorate for Financial and Enterprise Affairs (DAF), which is dedicated to assisting markets in funding inclusive economic growth. The core mission of DAF aligns with the broader strategic orientations of the OECD, focusing on setting and implementing standards, providing capacity-building support, and fostering collaboration across diverse stakeholders. Within DAF, the Investment Division focuses on advising governments on investment-related issues, including investment treaties, sustainable development, and foreign direct investment statistics.
About the Internship: The internship with the International Investment Governance (IIG) Unit offers a unique opportunity for students passionate about international economic law, international relations, or related fields to gain hands-on experience in legal and policy analysis. Interns will work under the supervision of Policy/Legal Analysts, contributing to one of two key workstreams: Investment screening mechanisms and other policies to safeguard national security interests, or Investment treaties.
Workstream 1: Investment Screening Mechanisms Interns assigned to this workstream will conduct research on investment screening mechanisms and other policies aimed at safeguarding national security interests. Responsibilities include analyzing legislation and data, examining legal and institutional arrangements, collecting and processing relevant data, and preparing research summaries for various audiences.
Workstream 2: Investment Treaties Interns assigned to this workstream will focus on research and analysis related to investment treaties and policies. Tasks include conducting research on investment treaties, analyzing substantive standards of protection, researching public international law, and supporting the team in meetings and workshops.
Candidate Profile: Prospective interns should possess a Master’s degree in international economic law, economic law, international relations, or a related field. Proficiency in English is essential, with a working knowledge of French considered advantageous. Key competencies include expertise in public international law and investment treaty law, a genuine interest in international investment issues, experience with data analysis, diplomatic sensitivity, strong communication skills, analytical rigor, and the ability to work autonomously.
Eligibility and Contract Duration: The internship is primarily open to nationals of OECD member countries who are enrolled as full-time students in a relevant degree program. The internship is expected to commence in September 2024, with a duration of at least four months, preferably six months. Full-time (40 hours per week) or part-time arrangements (at least 60%) are possible, with the option for remote work depending on individual circumstances. Interns will receive a monthly stipend of EUR 1,000 to cover living expenses.
