Among these, the Division for Prosperity stands out, comprising the Hiroshima Office and the Geneva-based Public Finance and Trade Programme Unit. Together, these entities work tirelessly to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, striving to uplift society’s most vulnerable populations and foster resilience in the face of adversity.

The Division for Prosperity operates on the principle of harnessing knowledge and expertise to drive meaningful change in six thematic areas:

One of the Division’s flagship initiatives is the Shimanami Collective – Sea and Human Security for Open Indo-Pacific Ocean (FOIP). This groundbreaking program aims to equip government officials and activists in the Pacific small island developing states (SIDS) and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries with the necessary skills, knowledge, and capacity to enhance climate, social, economic, food, and maritime security. By fostering collaboration and coordination across the Pacific, the FOIP initiative seeks to address complex challenges and promote sustainable development in the region.
Role of Communications Officer:
As a Communications Officer within the Division for Prosperity, you will play a pivotal role in enhancing the visibility of the UNITAR Hiroshima Office and advancing the Division’s strategic objectives through effective communication strategies. Your responsibilities will encompass a wide range of tasks, including:
- Implementing UNITAR’s communication strategies to ensure the timely creation and dissemination of multilingual, multimedia materials across various platforms, including the UNITAR website, social media channels, and quarterly newsletters.
- Developing targeted communication proposals to raise awareness of UNITAR’s brand and programs, with a particular focus on the Hiroshima Office and Division for Prosperity initiatives in Japan and beyond.
- Building and nurturing strong relationships with journalists, media outlets, and other key stakeholders to amplify UNITAR’s messaging and enhance its visibility in the public sphere.
- Organizing and conducting media events, interviews, and briefings to engage with local and international media outlets, ensuring comprehensive coverage of UNITAR’s activities and events.
- Managing and enhancing UNITAR’s social media presence, developing compelling content and design templates to increase engagement and foster dialogue with followers and stakeholders.
- Leading the ongoing update and maintenance of the UNITAR Hiroshima Office website in both English and Japanese, ensuring that it remains current, relevant, and user-friendly for visitors.
- Providing logistical and administrative support to the communications team and project teams, including financial management and coordination of events and campaigns.
- Undertaking any other tasks as assigned by the Head of the Hiroshima Office, Division for Prosperity, to support the overall objectives of the Division and UNITAR.
Requirements for the Position:
To be considered for the role of Communications Officer, candidates should meet the following minimum requirements:
- Education: Possession of a first-level university degree in communications, journalism, international relations, or a related field is required.
- Experience: A minimum of two years of experience in communications, public relations, media, or a related field is essential. Experience in language translation is considered an asset.
- Language Skills: Native-level proficiency in Japanese is required, along with excellent oral and written communication skills. Working knowledge of English is also required, while proficiency in other UN languages is advantageous.
