The Director, Budgets & Financial Planning position is an integral part of the financial management team, responsible for developing, monitoring, and executing strategic budgeting initiatives. The selected candidate will oversee financial planning processes, revenue and expense forecasting, and budget tracking across the organization. Working closely with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Director will ensure that financial strategies align with the organization’s mission and long-term sustainability. This position also entails supervising a team of budget analysts who will provide financial support to various initiatives, teams, and alliances within the organization.
Additionally, this role requires high-level collaboration with senior leadership to enhance budget transparency, efficiency, and reporting while driving best financial practices throughout the organization. This is a full-time position based in Washington, DC, operating on a hybrid schedule.

Tasks
The Director of Budgets and Financial Planning will be responsible for a range of high-level financial management and operational functions, including:
- Leading the development, execution, and monitoring of the organization’s enterprise-level budget to align with strategic priorities.
- Forecasting revenue, expenses, and cash flow to ensure financial sustainability and support decision-making processes.
- Overseeing a team of budget analysts, providing mentorship, training, and guidance in financial planning and budget management.
- Developing budget-to-actual reports and financial analysis for senior leadership, including the CEO and COO, to support decision-making.
- Managing financial reporting systems to enhance budget tracking, expense monitoring, and revenue allocation.
- Coordinating with the Finance Director (Controller) to ensure timely processing of expenses and revenue while facilitating the monthly book-closing process.
- Supporting the transition to a new budgeting platform, ensuring a standardized and efficient budgeting process.
- Maintaining comprehensive budgeting guidelines and documentation to promote transparency and efficiency across all financial planning initiatives.
- Ensuring close collaboration between budgeting, agreements, and program teams to optimize financial management across departments.
- Monitoring and regularly updating revenue forecasts and financial statements to track the organization’s financial position.
- Developing standardized approaches for forecasting common expenses, including travel, events, and operational costs.
- Supporting the Vice President of Partnerships and Strategic Initiatives in proposal budget development and donor-related financial management.
- Identifying opportunities for improving efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and financial performance while ensuring compliance with financial policies and donor requirements.
- Overseeing the development of operational manuals, guidelines, and user documentation for budget processes.
- Ensuring superior customer service by providing accurate, timely, and actionable financial insights to internal stakeholders.
- Performing other duties as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer.

Qualifications
Education and Certification
- A Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field is required.
- A Master’s degree in Finance, Business Administration (MBA), or a CPA certification is highly preferred.
Experience
- A minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience in budgeting, financial planning, forecasting, or project management.
- At least 5 years of supervisory experience, leading finance teams and overseeing budgeting functions.
- Demonstrated expertise in nonprofit financial management, including experience managing budgets for organizations funded by restricted grants and government donors.
- Experience in financial analysis, revenue forecasting, and cost optimization strategies.
- Proven ability to lead financial planning teams, analyze complex data, and synthesize findings into concise, decision-making reports.
- Strong understanding of financial reporting, budget planning tools, and compliance requirements.
- Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Financial Edge, and Salesforce.
- Experience with budgeting software and financial reporting platforms.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present financial insights to non-financial stakeholders.
- Attention to detail with exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills.
