Work Location GENEVA Expected Duration 3-6 Months Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the preeminent global environmental authority that establishes the worldwide environmental agenda, advocates for the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative voice for the global environment. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) regulates international trade in specimens (plants, animals, and parts and derivatives thereof) of about 36,000 species listed in the three Appendices of the Convention. To effectively implement the Convention and ensure that international wildlife trade is legal, sustainable, and traceable, CITES Parties must have adequate national legislation and designate one or more Management and Scientific authorities. The Secretariat’s role is to support Parties in the Convention’s effective implementation and related Resolutions and Decisions. Additionally, the Secretariat, under the guidance of the Conference of the Parties, undertakes various specific activities to address current conservation needs and challenges, including organizing annual meetings of permanent committees and smaller ad hoc workshops and consultations. Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the CITES Outreach and Projects Unit, the interns will assist in planning, researching, producing, and releasing communications and multimedia materials on a broad range of wildlife conservation topics across various CITES channels. Specific tasks and responsibilities:

  • Drafting social media content
  • Web and digital communications
  • Photo and video editing & production
  • Designing images, icons, and infographics
  • Support for the World Wildlife Day and CITES@50 campaign preparations.

The internship will be for a minimum of three (3) months and a maximum of six (6) months within the Outreach and Projects Unit, with a flexible start date in January 2024, accommodating prospective interns’ availability and academic constraints. Communications and Multimedia Interns

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Additional Information Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Communications and Multimedia Interns

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study closely related to the type of internship being applied for is required. Communications and Multimedia Interns
