Background & Job Description
The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) is a constitutional institution in South Africa, mandated by Section 187 of the Constitution to promote and protect gender equality. The CGE plays a critical role in monitoring, investigating, lobbying, advocating, educating, and researching issues related to gender equality. The CGE Internship Programme is a 24-month initiative designed to develop the next generation of professionals dedicated to gender justice and social transformation. Interns will gain practical, real-world experience within a nationally recognized public entity, contributing directly to the CGE’s mission of creating a more inclusive and equitable society in South Africa. Placements are available in key functional areas critical to the CGE’s operations.
Tasks
Interns will be placed at the CGE Head Office in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, and will support specific departments based on their chosen field:
INTERN: COMMUNICATIONS
- Gaining practical experience in media relations, public awareness campaigns, and stakeholder engagement.
- Assisting with digital content creation, including managing social media accounts and updating the CGE website.
- Drafting press releases and official statements.
- Supporting internal and external communication efforts and monitoring media coverage related to gender issues.
INTERN: INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY (ICT)
- Providing IT support and troubleshooting.
- Assisting with network administration and cybersecurity protocols.
- Supporting hardware and software maintenance.
- Helping with data backups and digital record management.
INTERN: SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT (GAUTENG)
- Assisting in procurement planning and acquisition.
- Learning about compliance with Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) and Supply Chain Management (SCM) regulations.
- Supporting vendor management and invoice processing.
- Helping to ensure the timely delivery of goods and services.

Qualifications
Education and Certification
- Communications Intern: A Bachelor’s Degree (NQF 7) or equivalent in Journalism or Communications.
- Information Communications Technology (ICT) Intern: A Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in Information Technology, Computer Science, or Information Systems.
- Supply Chain Management Intern: An Honours Degree (NQF 8) in Supply Chain Management, Finance, or Logistics.
Experience
Applicants must be South African citizens aged between 18 and 35 years old. They must not have been previously employed in the field of study relevant to the internship. All candidates must reside within Gauteng province. General Requirements for all roles: Strong verbal and written communication skills, computer literacy (especially MS Office proficiency), attention to detail, and the ability to maintain confidentiality (for SCM). A proactive attitude and ability to work independently are highly valued.
Additional Information
These are 24-month (2-year) internship programmes, offering a significant opportunity for long-term growth within a structured mentorship environment.
- Stipend for Communications and ICT Interns: R6,500.00 per month.
- Stipend for Supply Chain Management Intern: R7,500.00 per month. Successful candidates will be required to enter into an Internship Agreement with CGE. Please note that there will be no obligation to employ the intern upon completion of the programme. Interns are responsible for their own transport to the Head Office in Braamfontein.
