ClimateWorks Foundation was established in 2008 and has since become a powerful force in the climate philanthropy space, awarding over $2 billion in grants to more than 850 organizations globally. The foundation’s work is multi-faceted, encompassing everything from scaling solutions in key sectors like transportation and industry to providing funders with the intelligence and tools they need to make high-impact investments. The Assistant General Counsel will be an integral part of this mission, working under the direction of the General Counsel to provide essential legal counsel to the entire organization.

The role involves analyzing intricate legal issues across a wide spectrum of topics, including tax compliance for nonprofits, data privacy and security, and international law for philanthropic organizations. Given ClimateWorks’ global footprint, the position requires a deep understanding of legal and regulatory frameworks in countries outside of the United States. You will be a key advisor on a variety of legal and risk issues, helping to guide the organization in a fast-paced and high-stakes environment. Tasks

  • Legal Compliance & Advisory: Advise on federal and state legal compliance for nonprofit organizations working on environmental or climate mitigation issues.
  • Document Drafting & Review: Draft and meticulously review a wide array of legal documents, including consulting contracts, funder and grant agreements, and memoranda of understanding.
  • Communications & Risk Analysis: Provide legal opinions and a keen risk analysis on all external-facing communications and public technical reports.
  • Collaboration & Training: Work closely with both in-house and outside counsel to develop internal legal guidance and conduct staff trainings on key legal and risk issues.
  • Enterprise Risk Management: Collaborate with senior management to shape and implement an organizational approach to enterprise risk management.
  • Specialized Legal Counsel: Provide expert legal opinions on a variety of niche topics, including data privacy, artificial intelligence, and employment matters.
  • Strategic Guidance: Evaluate and determine the appropriate legal course of action to meet organizational objectives in a heightened risk environment.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • Required: A Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Required: A current and active license to practice law in at least one (1) U.S. jurisdiction.

Experience

  • Required: A minimum of 6+ years of professional legal experience, either in a law firm with a focus on tax-exempt organizations or as in-house counsel for a nonprofit organization.
  • Required: Prior experience with international organizations and a proven track record of providing legal analysis and advice on compliance laws in countries outside of the U.S.
  • Preferred: Substantial experience in legal risk management for non-profits and prior litigation experience.

Additional Information

This is a full-time, remote position, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. A geographic differential is applied based on the candidate’s location. The salary range for candidates in the Bay Area and New York City is $165,000 – $175,000 annually, while the salary for other U.S. locations is $155,000 – $165,000 annually. ClimateWorks offers an outstanding benefits package, including a choice of comprehensive healthcare plans, generous paid time off (20-30 days), and a robust 401k plan with a 9% employer contribution and a 100% match up to 6% of gross earnings.
