About the Programme:

The internship programme offers students the opportunity to apply their educational skills in real-world scenarios within the realm of economic and social statistics. As an intern, you will be exposed to the work of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), contributing to projects in economic statistics, demographic and social statistics, environmental and energy statistics, sustainable development goals (SDGs), gender statistics, and the application of data science and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in data collection, analysis, and visualization.

Duties and Responsibilities:

As a Data Science Research Intern, you will work under the direct supervision of a technical specialist. Your responsibilities will include:

1. Supporting Cluster 4 Statistics Projects: Utilize your data science skills to support the implementation of various statistical projects within Cluster 4.
2. Statistical Data Management: Assist in designing, organizing, and managing the collection, evaluation, analysis, compilation, and dissemination of statistical data.
3. Database Management: Contribute to the development, implementation, and management of statistical databases.
4. Technical Support: Provide technical support for data collection programs, country practices, and related information.
5. Methodological Research: Participate in methodological research and contribute inputs/drafts for technical documentation and reports.
6. Event Organization: Assist in organizing seminars, working groups, and expert meetings.
7. Machine Learning and Technology Projects: Collaborate on the development of machine-learning tools for statistical analysis and technology projects.
8. Natural Language Processing (NLP): Apply advanced NLP techniques to organize large datasets and extract actionable insights.
9. Communication of Findings: Effectively communicate findings to stakeholders and contribute to knowledge sharing.
10. Collaboration: Collaborate with public and private organizations to access datasets and contribute to policy-making efforts.
11. Support and Assistance: Provide additional support and assistance as required.

Qualifications and Skills:

To qualify for this internship, you must meet the following criteria:

1. Education: Enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher), in the final academic year of a first university degree programme, or have graduated with a university degree.
2. Computer Literacy: Proficient in standard software applications, especially those relevant to data science and statistical analysis.
3. Interest in the UN: Demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to its ideals.
4. Cultural Sensitivity: Ability to interact successfully with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
5. Technical Skills: Strong programming skills, particularly in Python and other data science-related software packages. Knowledge of statistical analysis, machine learning techniques, and data visualization is desirable.
6. Language Proficiency: Fluency in English is required. Fluency in French and Arabic is desirable.

• This is an unpaid internship, and interns are responsible for their own travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses.
• Interns must have valid medical insurance coverage for the duration of the internship and provide a medical certificate of good health before commencement.
• Flexible working arrangements are available, with interns committing to a minimum of two months of full-time work and completing the internship within six months.

Interns are responsible for covering their travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Non-citizens or permanent residents may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
