About the Graduate Research Grant Program

Established in February 2004, OAR’s Graduate Research Grant Program has been instrumental in supporting research that enhances the understanding and support of autistic learners and their families. To date, OAR has awarded over $329,266 to 193 graduate research studies, spanning a diverse array of topics within the autism field.

Funding and Eligibility

The program offers grants of:

• $1,000 for Master’s candidates
• $2,000 for Doctoral or Post-Doctoral candidates

OAR is committed to funding studies that are likely to yield practical, objective results, helping parents, families, professionals, and autistic individuals make informed choices leading to healthier, happier lives. International students and those studying outside the U.S. are welcome to apply.

Focus Areas

The grant competition aims to support research in several key areas, including:

• Assessment and Intervention Models: Analysis, evaluation, or comparison of models related to assessment, treatment, or service systems.
• Early Intervention and Education: Applied aspects of early intervention, school-based education, behavioral, or communication interventions.
• Adult Issues: Research on continuing education, employment, housing models, and later intervention.
• Family and Community Support: Issues related to family support, social integration, and challenging behavior.
• Communication Systems: Efficacy of alternative or augmentative communication systems across the lifespan.
• In Vivo Context Research: Applied research in the context where intervention outcomes are expected to be used.

Application Process and Deadlines

To apply for this grant, you must submit your proposal by February 3, 2025, at 11:59 pm EST. The grant period for funded projects will be from July 1, 2025, to December 31, 2026. Research commenced before the grant period begins will not be eligible.

Proposal Requirements

Your proposal should include:

• Transmittal/Cover Letter: Introduction of the Principal Investigator and faculty advisor, amount requested, and description of the intended use of funds.
• Abstract: A brief summary of the project.
• Background: Overview of relevant historical and contemporary knowledge.
• Timeline: Description of the project timeline, to be completed within 18 months.
• Methodology and Evaluation: Detailed research design, methodology, and evaluation measures.
• Outcome Recommendations: Expected outcomes and recommendations for further research.
• Practical Relevance: Relevance of the study to everyday challenges faced by the autism community.
• Subject Protection: Evidence of IRB approval or exemption.
• Budget: Itemized budget excluding graduate student time, tuition, and electronic equipment.
• Letter of Support: Signed letter from the faculty research advisor.
