Background & Job Description
The Digital Humanism Fellowship at the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna aims to foster cutting-edge research on the complex interplay between technology and humankind. This program invites scholars from diverse academic fields to explore the societal, economic, and geopolitical implications of digitalization. Junior visiting fellows will spend a three-month period at the IWM (typically in autumn 2025 or Spring 2026, depending on the call) to conduct individual research projects, integrate into a vibrant scholarly community, and collaborate with senior visiting fellows.
Tasks
Junior Visiting Fellows will focus on their individual research projects at the intersection of digitalization with societal, economic, and geopolitical dimensions, or other relevant topics from the humanities and social sciences. Key activities include:
- Conducting innovative research.
- Engaging in discussions and collaborations with senior visiting fellows and the IWM scholarly community.
- Participating in Institute activities.

Qualifications
Education and Certification
Applicants for Junior Visiting Fellowships must either be currently pursuing their doctoral degree or have obtained a PhD no more than four years prior to the application deadline.
Experience
Candidates should have a strong academic background and be prepared to conduct independent research on the intersection of digitalization with societal, economic, and geopolitical dimensions. No specific work experience beyond academic research is typically required.
Additional Information
This is a fully funded fellowship offering a monthly stipend to cover accommodation, living expenses, travel, health insurance, and incidental costs in Vienna. Postdoctoral candidates will receive EUR 3,300 per month, while doctoral candidates will receive EUR 2,750 per month. The IWM also provides fellows with office space, internet access, in-house research and administrative facilities, and a complimentary in-house lunch.
