Background & Job Description

The Europe and Central Asia (ECA) region is diverse, and UNICEF is actively involved in empowering and engaging youth as agents of positive change. This Intern – Youth Engagement role, situated within the Governance and Peacebuilding (GPB) Team, supports UNICEF’s strategic focus on adolescent development and participation. The intern will contribute to initiatives that bridge gaps between youth-focused policies and population dynamics, promoting sustainable development and amplifying the voices of young people across the ECA region.
Tasks
Under the direct supervision of the Youth Engagement Specialist, the Intern – Youth Engagement will undertake a variety of tasks crucial to advancing UNICEF’s work in the ECA region. These responsibilities typically include:
- Supporting research and analysis on youth empowerment, governance, and development challenges and opportunities.
- Contributing to the drafting of concept notes, background notes, and analytical pieces to inform the development of new programmatic initiatives focused on youth.
- Assisting in the organization of meetings and workshops relevant to the GPB Team’s work on youth engagement.
- Supporting day-to-day activities related to regional youth initiatives, which may involve administrative or logistical coordination.
- Preparing communication pieces (e.g., articles, blog posts) to disseminate research findings and analytical results of UNICEF’s youth engagement work.
- Potentially contributing to the updating of regional youth frameworks/strategies.

Qualifications
Education and Certification
Applicants must be currently enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), OR be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent). Candidates who have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) in a relevant discipline such as Public Policy, International Relations, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Communications, Public Health, Economics, or other related fields, and who can start the internship within one year of graduation, are also eligible.
Experience
A demonstrated strong interest and/or academic background in urban/local governance, green/just transition, development, or related issues is a requirement. Experience in writing analytical products, drafting, and editorial work is an asset. Prior research or programmatic experience in the ECA region is also considered an asset. Candidates must have written and spoken proficiency in English. Strong analytical, reporting, writing, interpersonal, communication, and diplomatic skills are essential. The ability to work effectively in a team, openness to change, and cultural sensitivity are highly valued.
Additional Information
This internship is a fantastic opportunity to gain practical experience with a leading international organization and contribute to meaningful work impacting children and youth. Interns are entitled to a stipend as a contribution towards living expenses, paid by UNICEF. A one-time lump sum for travel and visa costs may also be granted if funding is available. Internships typically range from 6 to 26 weeks, with this specific position in Istanbul noted to be for 3 months, with a possibility of extension up to 6 months.
