The United Nations (UN) is offering an exciting opportunity for an Entry Level Research Assistant position in the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). This position is based in Amman, Jordan, and offers individuals an opportunity to contribute to research on smart city initiatives, urban governance, and youth participation. As part of the Economic, Social, and Development network, the role involves conducting surveys, facilitating workshops, and assisting in data collection to improve urban development and human rights initiatives.

The research assistant will work closely with the local community, youth advisory groups, and various stakeholders in Amman to collect vital data on urban governance issues and smart city technologies.
This role is designed for recent graduates or current graduate students in fields such as urban studies, sociology, public policy, geography, or similar disciplines. You will gain hands-on experience in conducting both qualitative and quantitative research, working alongside a dynamic and passionate team of researchers, and contributing to essential reports that could influence future urban planning and governance strategies.

Tasks
As an Entry-Level Research Assistant, you will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Data Collection and Analysis:
- Conduct surveys and facilitate discussions with youth and other community stakeholders in Amman, Jordan.
- Assist in gathering quantitative and qualitative data on topics such as smart city initiatives, youth participation, and urban governance.
- Help write up findings from fieldwork, including reflections and insights drawn from the data.
- Translation of Materials:
- Translate presentation materials and documents into local languages as necessary for the community and stakeholders.
- Community Engagement and Communication:
- Support in organizing and facilitating validation workshops with young people in the community.
- Ensure effective coordination with local Youth Advisory Groups, maintaining regular contact and facilitating collaboration between the research team and these groups.
- Act as a liaison between the research team and local stakeholders, ensuring clear and effective communication throughout the project.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain detailed records of research activities, including data collection, analysis, and meetings.
- Contribute to the preparation of a comprehensive research report, as well as an illustrated version to share findings in a more accessible format.
- Workshop Organization and Facilitation:
- Assist in organizing and facilitating validation workshops aimed at gathering feedback from the youth participants.
- Provide logistical support to ensure the smooth execution of all activities and fieldwork sessions.
- Additional Tasks:
- Be prepared to take on any additional duties as required to ensure the success of the research project.

Qualifications
Education and Certification
- An advanced degree in urban studies, sociology, public policy, geography, or a related field is required. However, current graduate students or researchers in these disciplines can be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.
Experience
- Two years of previous experience conducting qualitative and quantitative research, especially in urban studies, human rights, or related fields, is required.
- Experience working with youth or community organizations is desirable.
Skills
- Communication skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, as you will be engaging with diverse stakeholders and contributing to research reports.
- Organizational skills: Strong organizational skills, the ability to manage time effectively, and a demonstrated capacity to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Commitment to social justice: A demonstrated commitment to principles of equity, inclusion, and social justice is required.
- Technical skills: Familiarity with data analysis software and digital governance tools is preferred. Experience with participatory research methods is also desirable.
- Local knowledge: Knowledge of the local context and challenges related to urban development and governance in Jordan is beneficial.
Languages
- Fluency in English and Arabic (both oral and written) is required for effective communication with diverse stakeholders and community members.

- Work Location: This role will be based in Amman, Jordan for the duration of the assignment.
- Expected Duration: The position is expected to last for 14 days.
