Background & Job Description

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is working to enhance the quality and availability of demographic and social statistics in the Arab region to support evidence-based policymaking. As part of this initiative, ESCWA is seeking a Research Assistant to contribute to the project, “Supporting the Enhancement and Modernization of Demographic and Social Statistics in the Arab States.” The project aims to strengthen national statistical systems, improve data collection procedures, and update statistical dissemination systems to address data gaps in important demographic and social indicators.

The Research Assistant will support the team in processing and analyzing data, updating databases, and automating online systems to improve the availability and accessibility of critical social and demographic data for regional and national stakeholders.


Tasks

  • Compile, process, and manipulate data sets from various sources to improve data availability and quality.
  • Update ESCWA’s database and assist in automating processes for online data access.
  • Develop automated mechanisms for online data processing and connecting data from sources to the database.
  • Respond to data-related queries and prepare datasets upon request.
  • Draft research reports, presentations, and assist with estimation modeling.
  • Conduct statistical analysis using R, Python, or STATA.
  • Create data visualizations to communicate findings.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned to support the project’s goals.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Demography, Population, Economics, Business Analysis, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field is required.

Skills and Experience

  • Strong analytical and management skills with the ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Good research, drafting, and data management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and programming languages such as Python, R, or STATA is desirable.
  • Familiarity with data visualization techniques.

Language Requirements

  • Fluency in both Arabic and English is required (speaking, reading, writing, and understanding).

Additional Information

  • Legal Right to Work: The incumbent must have the legal right to live and work in Lebanon.
