Background & Job Description

The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) is seeking a Research Assistant to support the Office of Intergovernmental Support and Coordination for Sustainable Development (OISC), specifically within the Operational Activities Policy Branch (OAPB). This role involves assisting in research, administrative tasks, and organizational preparation for meetings and events related to economic and social development. The position is based in New York and falls under the General Service and Related Categories at the G-5 level.

Tasks

  • Assist in the organization and preparation of economic and social development meetings.
  • Compile and analyze data, research relevant information, and prepare reports.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and records for the work unit.
  • Oversee meeting registrations for ECOSOC, the General Assembly, and other interagency bodies.
  • Draft routine correspondence, ensure quality control of documents, and coordinate with the Documents Control team.
  • Attend meetings, take minutes, and monitor follow-up activities.
  • Gather and disseminate media information related to ECOSOC, the General Assembly, and other UN bodies.
  • Coordinate with internal teams, UN entities, and Permanent Missions as required.
  • Arrange and coordinate video and teleconference activities.
  • Support personnel recruitment processes and manage travel arrangements for non-staff meeting participants.
  • Provide administrative support, including monitoring accounts, managing office technology needs, and organizing conferences.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Experience

  • A minimum of five years of experience in collecting and researching data related to social and economic development.
    • If the candidate holds a first-level university degree or higher, the experience requirement is reduced to three years.
  • Experience in administrative and conference support is required.
  • Experience in arranging international conferences and meetings is required.
  • Familiarity with ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies is desirable.
  • Experience in processing recruitment and working with ERP systems like Umoja is an asset.
