Background & Job Description

The Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) and the Department of Peace Operations (DPO) oversee international efforts to resolve conflicts, prevent crises, and support peacebuilding missions worldwide.

The Research Assistant will be based in New York and work within the Haiti Team of the Americas Division under the DPPA-DPO shared structure. This team is responsible for supporting UN operations in Haiti, including the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), and advising senior UN officials on strategic peacebuilding initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

The Research Assistant will provide analytical and administrative support to the Haiti Team, assisting in policy research, data collection, and program coordination. Responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring and analyzing political and economic developments in Haiti.
  • Tracking news, media reports, and UN briefings relevant to peacebuilding efforts.
  • Preparing summaries, reports, presentations, and visual data representations.
  • Assisting with data collection and analysis for decision-making and reporting.
  • Contributing to policy discussions, knowledge-sharing, and briefings.
  • Assisting in the coordination of visits and official meetings for UN Haiti leadership.
  • Providing technical research support on socio-political and economic topics.
  • Organizing and compiling data from official UN sources, research databases, and reports.
  • Assisting in content updates for websites, reports, and outreach materials.
  • Supporting collaboration between UN agencies, NGOs, and government entities.

Qualifications

Education & Certification Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A university degree (Bachelor’s or higher) in political science, international relations, social sciences, or related fields is desirable and can reduce required experience.

Experience Requirements

  • Several years of experience in data collection, research, policy analysis, or socio-political and economic development is required.
  • At least one year of experience in data analytics is desirable.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong research and analytical skills in political and economic affairs.
  • Experience in report writing, policy research, and summarizing complex data.
  • Proficiency in data visualization, database management, and technical research.
  • Familiarity with UN peacebuilding efforts, international relations, and development policies.
  • Fluency in English is required; French proficiency is desirable.
