Background & Job Description

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority, guiding the global environmental agenda and advancing sustainable development. UNEP’s Ecosystems Division collaborates with international and national partners to provide technical assistance and advisory services. This position supports the execution, management, monitoring, and evaluation of the EU-funded “Marine Litter MED PLUS” Project aimed at improving marine litter management in the Mediterranean. The role is based in Athens, Greece, within the Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP) – Barcelona Convention Secretariat.

Tasks

  • Support the execution and management of the EU-funded ML MED PLUS Project.
  • Collaborate with partners and UNEP/MAP components to implement and evaluate projects.
  • Conduct research and analysis of program-related data, including statistical and informational data from various sources.
  • Assist in policy coordination and evaluation, addressing emerging issues and trends.
  • Organize workshops and assist clients in managing change.
  • Contribute to field missions, data collection, and provide administrative support.
  • Prepare written outputs such as background papers, notes, and reports.
  • Help manage budget preparation, progress reports, and financial statements.
  • Engage in outreach activities such as training workshops and seminars.
  • Collect and analyze data to identify trends, providing insights through graphs and reports.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in environmental management, science, engineering, or a related field is required.
  • A first-level university degree plus two years of experience may substitute for the advanced degree.
  • Completion of data analytics, business analytics, or data science programs is desirable.

Experience

  • Minimum two years of experience in project/programme management, particularly in marine and coastal environment management, including marine litter.
  • Experience in the implementation of marine litter management strategies for the Mediterranean region, EcAp, and IMAP is preferred.
  • Experience with data analytics is a plus.

Additional Information

  • Languages: Fluency in English is required; French is desirable.
  • The position is for an initial period of one year with the possibility of extension.
