AFGRI is now accepting applications for its 2025 Apprenticeship Programme, offering a valuable career path for South African matriculants eager to enter the agricultural or earthmoving machinery sector. This three-year apprenticeship aims to equip participants with the theoretical and practical skills necessary to qualify as a Tractor Mechanic or Earthmoving Technician.
This opportunity is exclusively available to recent matriculants. A general call for other applicants will be announced later in August and September 2025.
The programme begins with a 6-month probation period and, if successful, leads into a formal three-year apprenticeship contract. Training includes product-specific sessions from John Deere and internal sessions delivered by AFGRI specialists.
Tasks
As an AFGRI apprentice, your responsibilities will include:
- Performing maintenance and repairs on agricultural and earthmoving equipment
- Gaining practical experience in mechanics and diagnostics
- Assisting with stock control and parts inventory
- Delivering technical support and customer service in a workshop setting
- Supporting general workshop operations and procedures

Qualifications
Education and Certification:
You may qualify through one of two educational paths:
Option 1: N2 Certificate (must include):
- Mathematics
- Engineering Science
- Diesel Trade Theory
- One of the following:
- Industrial Electronics
- Engineering/Technical Drawing
- Motor Trade Theory
Option 2: Matric Certificate, with passes in any of the following:
- Mathematics (Not Mathematical Literacy)
- Technical Mathematics
- Physical Science
- Technical Science
- Engineering Graphics and Design
If you do not yet meet N2 requirements, AFGRI provides support through Further Education and Training (FET) as part of the apprenticeship.
Experience and Skills:
- Basic computer and administration abilities
- Good communication skills
- A valid driverβs license
Additional Information
- Training is fully covered, but any failed modules must be repeated at your own cost.
- A work-back period equal to your training duration is required after qualification.
- The maximum contract period is 4 years.
- You should set aside at least 60 minutes to complete the application, with an additional 30 minutes for assessments.
