The Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts at Princeton University, housed within the Council of the Humanities, is a world-renowned program dedicated to nurturing the next generation of scholars. Tasks

Fellows appointed to the Princeton Society of Fellows will have a dual role, combining research and teaching responsibilities. Key tasks include:

Conducting independent research in their field of specialization throughout the three-year fellowship.
Teaching one undergraduate course per semester during the first two years, and one course during the final year. Fellows hold the rank of Associate Research Scholar and are also designated as Lecturers while teaching.
Actively participating in the Society’s interdisciplinary seminars, workshops, and events.
Engaging fully in the academic life of Princeton University, including collaboration with departments and mentorship of students.
Contributing to a vibrant intellectual community committed to liberal arts education and scholarly exchange.
Maintaining residency at Princeton University to foster in-person engagement and collaboration.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. awarded after January 1, 2024, or be on track to hold one. Applicants who have not yet completed their Ph.D. must have finished at least 50% of their dissertation at the time of application, and all Ph.D. requirements must be completed by June 15, 2026. Please note that degrees in Education or Law, and degrees from Princeton University, are not eligible for this fellowship.

Experience

Applicants should demonstrate teaching experience and a strong interest in undergraduate instruction. While not strictly required, at least one peer-reviewed publication or conference presentation is advantageous. Evidence of interdisciplinary scholarship is particularly valued. A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in academia is considered a significant asset. Individuals may apply only once to the Society of Fellows, so a strong, complete application is crucial.

Additional Information

This fully funded fellowship offers substantial support, including a competitive annual salary of $101,000–$105,000 (based on qualifications and experience), comprehensive medical and dental coverage, and extensive research support (access to grants, library services, and office space). Fellows are also eligible for university-subsidized housing or relocation assistance.

Fellowship Categories: Applicants can apply under one or more categories:

Open Fellowships (2 or 3 positions): For scholars in any field within the humanities or social sciences.
Fellowship in Humanistic Studies (1 position): For candidates whose research and teaching are broadly interdisciplinary across the humanities.
Fellowship in East Asian Studies (1 position): For specialists in East Asian history, literature, culture, or society. Applicants are automatically considered for multiple categories if their research overlaps.
