Tasks

While the SARF bursary is primarily financial assistance for studies, recipients are expected to fulfill certain obligations to contribute to the Federation and the road industry. These typically include:

Qualifications

Education and Certification

Applicants must be studying towards a qualification in a discipline applicable to the road transport sector at a recognized and accredited South African university, University of Technology, or equivalent institution. Fields of study covered include, but are not limited to:

• Road Engineering: Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Bridge Engineering, Pavement Engineering, Transportation Planning, Construction Management, Construction Materials, Storm Water Management, Environmental Aspects.
• Road Transport Management
• Road Transport Economics
• Road Safety Engineering
• Road Traffic Management (including Traffic Policing, Accident Investigation)

Academic Standing:

• National Diploma students: Must have passed their first semester (S1) examinations.
• Degree students: Must have passed their first-year examinations.
• Preference is given to postgraduate students (M.Sc., M.Tech., or higher), though applications from undergraduate students will be considered in special circumstances.
• Full-time study is preferred, but part-time study or distance learning applications will also be considered.

Experience

Applicants must be South African residents; however, individuals from SADC countries are also invited to apply (with preference given to South African residents). Preference may also be given to employees of members of the South African Road Federation. All applications must be endorsed by the appropriate academic authority at the institution where the applicant proposes to study. There is no specific work experience requirement, as this bursary is for students, but a demonstrated commitment to the road transport industry is essential.
