Background & Job Description

Amnesty International, a globally recognized human rights organization, is looking for an experienced professional to lead strategic research, advocacy, and campaigning initiatives in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. This fixed-term leadership role offers a unique opportunity to shape human rights discourse, engage with high-level stakeholders, and oversee impactful regional projects.

The position is responsible for directing integrated teams of researchers, campaigners, and communication experts to address urgent human rights issues. By ensuring high-quality research outputs and advocacy strategies, this leadership role contributes to Amnesty International’s mission to promote justice, freedom, and equality.

Additionally, the role requires extensive engagement with international organizations, government agencies, and civil society to drive meaningful change across the region.

Tasks

1. Research & Policy Development

  • Oversee research efforts focused on human rights violations, crisis response, and advocacy strategies.
  • Ensure that research outputs meet Amnesty International’s quality and impact standards.
  • Develop evidence-based policy recommendations for governments, international bodies, and advocacy groups.

2. Strategic Campaigning & Advocacy

  • Design and implement targeted campaigns to address pressing human rights issues.
  • Engage in high-level negotiations and policy discussions with key stakeholders, including government officials and UN agencies.
  • Advocate for policy changes through public statements, media outreach, and digital campaigns.

3. Team & Project Management

  • Lead cross-functional teams consisting of researchers, campaigners, and communication specialists.
  • Oversee the operational and strategic direction of Amnesty International’s regional office.
  • Ensure that teams respond effectively to emerging human rights crises in the region.

4. Stakeholder Engagement & Representation

  • Represent Amnesty International at high-profile meetings, international conferences, and public events.
  • Strengthen partnerships with civil society organizations, human rights defenders, and advocacy networks.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to amplify human rights campaigns.

5. Risk Management & Security Oversight

  • Implement security protocols for research missions and advocacy initiatives.
  • Assess and mitigate risks related to fieldwork, campaigning, and media exposure.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • A Master’s degree (or equivalent professional experience) in International Relations, Political Science, Law, Human Rights, or a related field.
  • Additional certifications in human rights law, conflict resolution, or policy analysis are an advantage.

Experience

  • Extensive experience in human rights advocacy, policy analysis, or international development.
  • Proven track record in leading research-driven campaigns and policy initiatives.
  • Experience working in high-risk environments, crisis settings, or international organizations.
  • Strong background in engaging with media, government agencies, and international institutions.

Skills & Competencies

  • Expert knowledge of human rights and political dynamics in at least one, preferably two, MENA countries.
  • Strong leadership and strategic management skills, with experience overseeing multi-functional teams.
  • Fluency in English and Arabic is essential; proficiency in French or Persian is desirable.
  • Ability to navigate complex political landscapes and sensitive human rights issues.

Additional Information

Contract & Compensation

  • Fixed-term contract (8 months) based in London.
  • Salary: £73,643 per annum (pro-rata for contract duration).
  • 35-hour workweek, with flexible working arrangements.
