African Union Media Fellowship Programme for 2023 to 2024 Open Call For Applications | To ensure Africa is at the forefront of defining and telling its own narrative to African and global audiences, the Information and Communication Directorate (ICD) of the African Union (AU) launched the AU Media Fellowship as a transformative platform to shape the African story and create a more accurate representation of Africa’s progress and opportunities using the using emerging digital technologies as a key tool for communication and engagement that will enable the continent to achieve the vision and aspirations of Africa’s Agenda 2063.

The AU Media Fellowship project is supported by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

What Does the AU Media Fellowship Offer?

The AU Media Fellowship provides the following benefits:

  1. Certified training from renowned partners and media training institutions.
  2. Grants to support the creation of in-depth stories and e-books that compile these stories.
  3. Access to AU senior leadership, high-level AU meetings, summits, events, policymakers, and AU development partners.
  4. Exclusive Masterclass sessions with industry professionals.
  5. Support from experienced mentors and institutions, as well as participation in key events with media industry professionals.
  6. International and continental study tours.
  7. Access to the AU Media Fellowship Alumni network.

What Are the Key Activities During The AU Media Fellowship?
The AU Media Fellowship is a 12-month program, starting in August 2023. The key activities during the fellowship are as follows:

August – December 2023:

  • Fellows will attend virtual induction sessions and on-boarding training.
  • They will embark on the first study tour and work on their pitch stories.
  • Mandatory online certified trainings (Self-selection) and master classes from industry experts will be offered.

January – March 2024:

  • Fellows will attend the second study tour.
  • Benefit from in-person training and one-on-one mentorship.
  • Participate in mandatory online certified training (Self-selection) and master classes from industry experts.
  • Attend the Annual African Union Summit in February 2024, where they can engage with senior African leadership and invited international participants.

April – June 2024:

  • Fellows will embark on the final study tour.
  • Continue to benefit from training and best practice sessions.

July 2024:

  • Fellows will present their final stories, receive certificates, and participate in closing ceremonies/sessions.

Thematic Tracks:
The media fellowship will focus on the following thematic tracks in line with Agenda 2063 goals and aspirations:

  1. Gender and Women Empowerment: Promoting efforts towards the Economic and Financial Inclusion of African Women.
  2. Advancing Trade, Investment, and Industrialisation: Promoting efforts towards Africa’s Economic integration, aligned with the 2023 AU theme of the year – Acceleration of AfCFTA Implementation.
