AFGRI is a leading agricultural services company in South Africa, deeply committed to developing skilled artisans for the crucial agricultural and earthmoving industries. This 3-year Apprenticeship Programme is designed to provide comprehensive in-service training, leading to a recognized qualification as either a Tractor Mechanic/Technician or an Earthmoving Mechanic/Technician. The program begins with a 6-month probation period, allowing both the apprentice and AFGRI to ensure a mutually beneficial long-term relationship. Thereafter, apprentices are bound by an AFGRI contract, undergoing structured training that combines theoretical knowledge with extensive practical exposure. This initiative directly addresses the demand for qualified technical professionals in South Africa’s agricultural and heavy machinery sectors, offering a clear pathway to a specialized and in-demand career.
Tasks
Apprentices in this program will undergo rigorous training to become proficient mechanics/technicians. Their duties will primarily involve:
- Being trained to become a Tractor Mechanic/Technician or Earthmoving Mechanic/Technician, encompassing theoretical and practical learning.
- Performing repair and maintenance on relevant equipment, including tractors, agricultural machinery, and earthmoving machinery.
- Being responsible for stock control related to parts and equipment.
- Providing customer service in the context of repairs and maintenance.
- Undertaking general work in the workshop and other workplace environments.
- Attending practical training institutes in different phases as required.
- Engaging in distance learning for N-subjects at a college (if needed), potentially including Saturday classes.
- Participating in product-specific training from John Deere and other suppliers, as well as AFGRI’s internal training led by specialists.

Qualifications
Education and Certification
This specific intake is ONLY for matriculants. The minimum requirement is a Matric Certificate (Grade 12). Applicants without an N2 qualification will be considered if their Matric Certificate includes passes in:
- Mathematics (not Literacy) or Technical Mathematics (not Literacy)
- Physical Science or Technical Science
- Engineering Graphics and Design
Alternatively, candidates must possess N2 subjects in:
- Mathematics
- Engineering Science
- Diesel Trade Theory
- And any one of the following: Industrial Electronics, Engineering / Technical Drawing, or Motor Trade Theory. Applicants lacking the N2 qualification can undertake these subjects, sponsored by AFGRI, as part of the program.
Experience
Candidates must possess a valid Driver’s License. Strong communication skills, admin skills, and computer literacy are essential. Applicants must be highly motivated, exhibit attention to detail, be team players, goal-oriented, and deadline-driven. This advert is specifically for matriculants; individuals should not be currently enrolled in any other learnership program or full-time studies. They must also be unemployed at the time of appointment.
Additional Information
This is a 3-year contract apprenticeship with AFGRI, commencing with a 6-month probation period. All training costs are covered by AFGRI, provided the apprentice passes the training phases. However, any failed training modules will need to be redone at the apprentice’s own cost and time. Apprentices will be bound by a contract that includes a “work-back period” for the duration of the qualification. Withdrawal from the program or the work-back period will incur costs, calculated based on the time and phase of withdrawal. The contract cannot be extended for more than 4 years; if qualification is not achieved within this timeframe, the contract expires. This apprenticeship offers a market-related salary (stipend) during the training period.
