Background & Job Description
The International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) is a leading intergovernmental organization dedicated to modernizing, harmonizing, and coordinating private and commercial law across jurisdictions. Its Internship Programme offers advanced undergraduate and postgraduate law students, as well as early-career legal professionals, a chance to gain hands-on experience in international legal research and institutional work. Interns will work closely with the UNIDROIT Secretariat for three months, contributing to active legal projects and instruments in various focus areas. All internships are in-person at UNIDROIT’s offices in Rome.
Tasks
Interns will contribute to active legal projects and instruments, with tasks including:
- Conducting legal research.
- Preparing concept notes.
- Drafting legal documents and reports.
- Performing translation work.
Applicants can express interest in various focus areas, including Access to Credit, International Commercial Contracts, Private Law and Agricultural Development, Law and Technology, Capital Markets and Financial Law, Transnational Civil Procedure, Cultural Property, and Sustainable Development. Each intern will be supervised by a UNIDROIT Officer.

Qualifications
Education and Certification
The program is open to advanced undergraduate and postgraduate law students, as well as early-career legal professionals.
Experience
Applicants must demonstrate professional legal proficiency in at least English or French. Strong research and drafting skills are essential.
Additional Information
While most internships are unpaid, a limited number of monthly stipends (€1,000) may be awarded to top candidates, with preference given to applicants from developing countries. Additionally, five funded internships are reserved for applicants from the Asia Pacific region through the UNIDROIT Asian Transnational Law Centre. However, candidates should be aware that the stipend is generally not sufficient to cover living expenses in Rome (€2,000-€3,000/month), and are encouraged to secure external funding. Interns must arrange and finance their own travel, accommodation, and insurance.
