Background & Job Description

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is committed to promoting sustainable development, improving environmental health, and addressing global challenges related to climate change, pollution, and natural resource depletion. Tasks

As a Programme Management Officer at UNEP, your responsibilities will include:

  6. Resource Mobilization: Support efforts to raise funds for UNEP’s environmental initiatives by preparing proposals and engaging with potential donors, ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of programmes.
  7. Capacity Building: Provide training and capacity-building support to UNEP’s partners, collaborators, and field teams to enhance their ability to implement environmental programmes effectively.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • Advanced Degree: A master’s degree or equivalent in Environmental Science, International Development, Environmental Policy, Public Administration, or a related field is required. Candidates with a relevant undergraduate degree combined with substantial experience may also be considered.
  • Project Management Certification: A certification in project management (e.g., PMP, Prince2) is advantageous and may be required for certain roles. It demonstrates the candidate’s ability to manage complex, multi-faceted projects efficiently.
  • Knowledge of International Environmental Policy: A strong understanding of global environmental issues, sustainable development goals (SDGs), and international climate frameworks such as the Paris Agreement is essential for these roles.

Experience

  • Relevant Work Experience: At least two to five years of professional experience in programme management, preferably within the UN system, international organizations, NGOs, or governmental agencies focusing on environmental issues.
  • Experience in International Development: Candidates should have experience in managing or supporting international development programmes, particularly those focused on environmental sustainability, climate action, or natural resource management.
  • Strong Analytical and Reporting Skills: You should have a proven track record in preparing analytical reports, policy documents, and presentations that communicate complex information clearly and effectively to stakeholders.
  • Cross-Cultural Experience: Since these roles are based in diverse international environments, experience working with cross-cultural teams or in multi-national settings is an advantage.
  • Fluency in English: English is the working language of UNEP, and a high level of proficiency is required. Knowledge of additional languages such as French, Spanish, or Arabic would be beneficial, depending on the duty station.
